Level of Knowledge and Perceptions among Healthcare Workers Regarding the Success of Therapy for Patients with Diabetes Mellitus at the Pringsewu District Health Center

Abstract

Diabetes is a chronic disease currently experiencing the most rapid rise in prevalence and ranks among the top ten leading causes of death worldwide. The success of diabetes mellitus therapy is heavily influenced by the role of healthcare professionals; therefore, a high level of knowledge and positive perceptions are essential for delivering optimal care, education, and therapy management. This study aimed to assess the knowledge levels and perceptions of healthcare professionals regarding the success of diabetes mellitus therapy at Community Health Centers (Puskesmas) in the Pringsewu region. A mixed-methods research approach with a cross-sectional design was employed. The study sample consisted of 20 healthcare professionals including physicians, pharmacists, nurses, and nutritionists from five Community Health Centers in Pringsewu: Gadingrejo, Sukoharjo, Pringsewu, Ambarawa, and Bumiratu. Data were collected through questionnaires and interviews and analyzed using quantitative univariate methods and qualitative analysis with the aid of Microsoft Excel and SPSS software. The results indicated that the majority of healthcare professionals possessed a good level of knowledge regarding diabetes mellitus therapy (50%), followed by those in the "sufficient" (45%) and "low" (5%) categories. Healthcare professionals' perceptions regarding the success of diabetes mellitus therapy were predominantly in the "excellent" category (90%), while 10% of respondents held "good" perceptions. Interview findings confirmed that healthcare professionals at the Pringsewu Community Health Centers held excellent perceptions regarding the success of diabetes mellitus therapy.
