Overview of Hepatitis B Examination among Waste Collection Workers in South Banjarbaru District in 2026

Abstract

Hepatitis B remains a significant public health problem because it can be transmitted through infected blood and body fluids. Waste collection workers are at risk of Hepatitis B virus infection due to their frequent direct contact with waste that may contain sharp objects or contaminated materials. This study aimed to determine the characteristics of respondents and the results of HBsAg examination among waste collection workers in South Banjarbaru District in 2026. This study employed a descriptive survey with a cross-sectional approach. A total of 25 waste collection workers were selected using the total sampling technique. Blood serum samples were collected and examined using the immunochromatography method to detect the presence of HBsAg. The results showed that the majority of respondents were male (92%), aged 41–50 years (44%), had completed senior high school education (48%), had a working period of 1–5 years and more than 10 years (36% each), and had never received the Hepatitis B vaccine (72%). The HBsAg examination results revealed that 3 respondents (12%) were reactive and 22 respondents (88%) were non-reactive. Based on the findings, most waste collection workers in South Banjarbaru District had non-reactive HBsAg results. However, reactive HBsAg results were still found in some respondents, indicating Hepatitis B infection. These findings suggest that the risk of Hepatitis B transmission among waste collection workers still exists. Therefore, preventive measures, including Hepatitis B vaccination, consistent use of personal protective equipment, and safe work practices, should be strengthened.
